BOWING TO THE MAGIC OF DREAMS

Plunging the camera into a dream. And opening the shutter to worlds into which anyone can dive. Yuli Sato reveals deep photographic oceans in which you can bathe in surreal nostalgia.

Yuli Sato is just twenty years old. The photographer lives and studies in Montreal, where she attends Concordia University.

Starting out with the idea of becoming an haute couture photographer, in the last two years she has taken another path, developing a personal style, imbued with dreamlike colours and nostalgic atmospheres.

Among the photographic artists from which she draws inspiration, Yuli cites Annette Pehrsson and Hannah Davis. But she also gets her ideas from the film Rivers and Tides by the Brit Andy Goldsworthy.

And as for Yuli's favourite cameras: a digital SLR Olympus E-510, two Polaroids, an old Perlux from 1952 – her favourite – and a Minolta with 35mm film inherited from her father. Of course, Yuli's dark room also features Photoshop, which she uses to play around with shadows and colours.

Yuli is the editor of Douse, a magazine and showcase for young budding photographers now at its second issue, and her dream is to be able to work for Lula magazine one day.
